*** love Necklaces,,,Known for transforming ordinary tabletops into shinier talking points with his bas-relief-esque goblets, pitchers and trays, Michael Galmer of Galmer Si *** ersmiths in Long Island City, Queens, has always believed that si *** er can be as polished a metal as any. “It’s very dynamic,” says Galmer, who has three decades of experience and a number of special projects for Tiffany & Company under his belt. “I was always in love with it.”
Now, Galmer makes exquisite use of his skills with a jewelry line called American Estate. Having tested the waters with seven flower-inspired cuffs — “I got such a good response,” he says, beaming — Galmer is set to present the nearly 50 pieces that make up his first official collection on Sunday. Fashioning each piece in his studio by hand and using the art of repoussé, a labor-intensive technique that leaves beautiful imperfections behind, he succeeds in turning the cold metal into “bolder, more lifelike shapes.” Pieces like the chrysanthemum wrap necklace ($1,750) are undeniably Galmer in style but feature color in the form of blue cabochon sapphires, too. “I wanted to make jewelry that is affordable and that looks beautiful,” Galmer says. “It was my feeling to bring something happy into the mix.”
